A homicide investigation is underway in Christchurch after a man was found dead in the suburb of Aranui early this morning.

Detective Inspector Nicola Reeves said police were called after the 38-year-old was found dead in Carisbrooke St, near Portchester St, at about 2.28am.

“Local residents can expect to see a large police presence in the area as a scene examination and area inquiries commence this morning,” Reeves said.

Cordons are in place and Carisbrooke St is blocked.

“Our focus is now on establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident and notifying and supporting the victim’s family at this difficult time,” Reeves added.

She said police aren’t yet in a position to release the victim’s name.

Investigators would like to hear from anyone who heard or saw anything unusual in and around Carisbrooke St around 2am this morning.

People with CCTV footage which could help with the investigation are also asked to contact police on 105, quoting Operation Walter. Information can also be provided to Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
