A man has been arrested and charged after allegedly attacking a person with a weapon at Wairarapa Hospital’s emergency department over the weekend.

Police say they were called to the scene around 11.40pm on Saturday.

A person sustained moderate injuries in the attack.

A 62-year-old man was arrested at the scene.

He has since been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

“A weapon has been recovered and inquiries into the incident are ongoing,” a police spokesperson told 1News.

“Police can confirm the victim and the offender are known to each other.”

In a statement, Health New Zealand / Te Whatu Ora Wairarapa group director operations, Kieran McCann, told 1News police “responded quickly” after being alerted through an alarm system.

“Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Wairarapa appreciates the isolated incident in Wairarapa Hospital’s Emergency Department yesterday would have been very upsetting to any witnesses,” he said.

McCann said extra security was placed in the emergency department following the incident and staff “are being supported”.

“We condemn all actions of violence against patients and staff and an investigation will take place into this incident to determine if there was anything which could have prevented it occurring.”
