A man has been arrested and charged after a three-month-old baby in the Hutt Valley was taken to hospital with nine fractures.

Police were called on June 14 after the baby girl was admitted to hospital.

Fractures were found on her ribcage, ankle and upper arm.

An investigation was launched by Wellington police’s child protection team.

Today, police revealed a 23-year-old man had been arrested on July 31 and charged with four counts of assaulting a child.

Detective Senior Sergeant Steve Wescott said the charges were related to the more “minor” injuries the baby sustained.

“We are committed to establishing the full circumstances of how the baby’s more serious injuries were inflicted, and holding those responsible to account.”

He would be due to appear in the Hutt Valley District Court on August 28.

Police thanked the public for providing information that helped with the investigation.

“This crucial information assisted our investigation, which has led to last week’s arrest.”

Police continue to investigate the matter.

In July, Detective Senior Sergeant Steve Wescott said police believed the injuries had occurred at diffrent times and did not believe they were accidental.

At the time, Wescott said the baby’s condition was improving.
