A 39-year-old man has been charged over an alleged assault in New Plymouth over the weekend, which saw another man hospitalised.

Police said the victim was approached by a man and his two sons at the Lee Breakwater about 4pm on Sunday.

“The first man was subsequently assaulted by the second man, and at one point was thrown off the jetty [off Oceanview Parade] and held under water,” a police spokesperson said. “The nature of injuries led to the victim being hospitalised.”

The arrest was announced this morning.

“The man has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and threatening to kill/do grievous bodily harm.

“He is scheduled to appear in New Plymouth District Court today,” police said.
