A man has died at a popular swimming spot south of Rotorua in the Bay of Plenty.

Police said in a statement they were notified around 7.30am on Sunday of a 50-year-old man located deceased in a creek in the Hot and Cold Pool area at Waiotapu.

“The man’s next of kin have been advised,” the statement said.

Police were finished with the scene by around midday.

“The death is not being considered suspicious and will be referred to the Coroner,” police said.

The Rotorua Daily Post reported that Ngāti Tahu-Ngāti Whaoa Runanga Trust general manager Eveyln Forrest said a rāhui had been placed on the area, prohibiting access and bathing until Sunday, March 3.
