State Highway 29 over the Kaimai Range has reopened after a truck carrying chlorine was earlier forced to stop.

Earlier, New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) said the highway over the Kaimai Range was closed in both directions between Valley View Rd and Soldiers Rd.

NZTA said the truck carrying a “hazardous substance understood to be chlorine” was forced to stop for safety reasons.

Four Fire and Emergency NZ crews, including one special hazmat unit, were called to the chemical spill shortly before 10am.

The chemical has since been neutralised and crews have left the scene, a FENZ spokesperson said.

Police earlier said the truck had broken down and the chlorine was reacting due to bad weather.
