A second person has been charged over alleged interference in the murder investigation of 15-year-old Kaea Karauria in Napier last month.

Karauria, 15, was found critically injured at an Alexander Ave address following reports of a disorder event at 3.10am on May 11 and died at the scene despite efforts by ambulance staff.

A teenage girl was arrested and charged on Tuesday with allegedly threatening a witness the day after the fight in which Karauria was killed.

Police were yet to charge anyone for the killing.

Detective Inspector Dave de Lange said a 21-year-old Napier woman was taken into custody earlier today after police found she had provided instructions to another person to destroy evidence.

She was charged with wilfully attempting to pervert the course of justice, and would appear in the Napier District Court on June 26.

The alleged incident occurred on May 11, the day of the fight in which Karauria was killed.

“Police will continue to act without hesitation when a witness is threatened, or attempts are made to sabotage an investigation. Any witness tampering will be treated very seriously,” de Lange said.

He said anyone with information about the incident should contact police.

“Our team continues to work hard on this investigation. Kaea and his family deserve justice.”
