A post-mortem on the woman who died at the scene of a police shooting in Christchurch’s Bryndwr will be completed in the coming days, as a man recovers from surgery after also being shot.

Officers were called to a residential address on Clyde Rd about 11pm Wednesday after receiving a report of a man armed with a knife, threatening to hurt himself and his partner.

“As police approached the address, a woman has run out of the house, closely followed by a man in possession of a hunting knife. Police believed the woman was at risk of imminent serious harm, and fired a single shot, which hit the man,” Canterbury District Commander Superintendent Tony Hill said yesterday.

The man was critically injured, and an officer approached to provide first aid.

The woman subsequently picked up the knife and threatened police.

“Despite an appeal for her to put down the weapon, she has advanced on police, brandishing the knife. A second shot was fired, hitting the woman,” Hill said.

First aid was immediately provided, but the shot woman died.

“A man remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital following the shooting on Clyde Rd in Christchurch,” Hill said .

Hill said in the coming days, a post-mortem was expected to be carried out on the woman.

Cordons and a scene guard would remain in place at the property while the scene examination was completed.

“Incidents such as this are complex and a range of investigations are already underway,” he said.

“As such, we are limited in the detail we can provide at this stage.”

Police were supporting the family of both the man and woman, as well as the 10 officers involved.

Officers involved in critical incidents such as fatal shootings are provided full welfare and wellness support.

Police yesterday said one officer fired both shots.
