International flights are set to make their return to Dunedin and Hamilton Airports next year after five and 13 years, respectively.

Jetstar will operate three return flights a week from Hamilton and Dunedin to the Gold Coast, as well as four return flights a week from Hamilton to Sydney.

More than 100,000 extra passengers would use Hamilton Airport as a result of the new flights, adding around $45m a year to the regional economy, a Hamilton Airport spokesperson said.

Dunedin Airport chief executive Daniel de Bono said it was “incredibly proud and excited” to announce the return of international flights.

“This is the result of five years of hard work, with our team behind the scenes negotiating on behalf of our community to bring international flights back to our city, and our region.”

He said the airport looks forward to “welcoming with open arms our Australian friends and family”.

“We know they will enjoy the many attractions of the Lower South Island, including The Catlins, Southland, Waitaki and Queenstown.”

Jetstar Group chief executive Stephanie Tully said the airline was excited to further expand its network in New Zealand.

“We thank Hamilton and Dunedin Airports for their ongoing support of low fares travel for Kiwis. It’s through strong partnerships like these that we’re able to grow our network in New Zealand.”
