A homicide investigation has been launched after the death of a man in Parakao, Northland.

Ambulance staff located the body of the 55-year-old on May 9, just before 4pm, at a rural property just off Mangakahia Road, on State Highway 15.

Detective Senior Sergeant Michelle Harris said homicide inquiries were underway following a post mortem being completed today.

Police said further information would be released about the victim once these processes were worked through.

Appeal for information

Harris said the Operation Cossar inquiry team was appealing anyone with information to come forward in relation to a vehicle and person seen in the area.

“We are particularly seeking information and sightings in the area between 2pm and 8pm on Friday, May 9,” she said.

Police were interested in sightings of a 1999 blue and silver Mitsubishi L200 ute, and reports of a man seen walking along State Highway 14 on the same afternoon and evening.

Police were also seeking any CCTV along Mangakahia Rd, Otaika Valley Rd and State Highway 14 towards Whangārei.

Police added it would particularly like any dashcam footage on the same route between 2pm and 8pm.

“We understand this is an unsettling time for the community and we are working hard to establish what has happened,” Harris said.

People with information could make a report online or by calling 105. Information could also be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers.
