A hidden treasure has been revealed as the redevelopment of Canterbury Museum progresses.

For 80 years, the north faces of the heritage-protected Benjamin Mountfort-designed buildings have been hidden from view.

Now, the stonework – dating back to the late 1800s – is being exposed and restored.

“It’s just so cool to see that stonework that goes back to 1877,” said Canterbury Museum director Anthony Wright. (Source: 1News)

“Just shivers down the spine. It was incredible because we imagined for so long what it might look like,” Canterbury Museum director Anthony Wright said.

“It’s just so cool to see that stonework that goes back to 1877.”

Architect Athfield Architects director Trevor Watt said it’s “fantastic to actually see what we thought was there”.

The stonework will become a central part of the building’s sweeping atrium.

The redevelopment of the museum began in 2023.

The doors are expected to reopen to the public in 2029.

“We’ve got the best of the old and the best of the new,” Wright said.
