MetService has issued a heavy rain warning for the Wairoa district and a heavy rain watch for the southern Gisborne region.

It said while the weather remains settled for the rest of the country this week, a large amount of rainfall will occur Thursday and Friday in these two areas.

The orange heavy rain warning for the Wairoa District is in place until midnight.

The heavy rain watch is valid for Tairāwhiti/Gisborne from Tolaga Bay southwards for the same period.

MetService Meteorologist Kgolofelo Dube said: “If you are located in these areas, you can prepare by clearing your drains and gutters, taking care near low-lying areas, and driving cautiously.”

Fine weather for Auckland and Wellington

The settled conditions will be welcome news for sports fans, and Dube said those planning on supporting the Warriors in Auckland will have fine weather on Friday.

“Football lovers are also in luck this Friday. The weather looks great in Wellington for the Oceania qualifiers, with clear skies and light winds.”

Lower South Island to get some rain

In the South Island, some rain and showers are expected on Saturday morning. Strong gale winds are also possible over Foveaux Strait.

MetService said these conditions are due to a cold front which is set to make landfall over Stewart Island that morning.

“The rain band will gradually weaken as it moves up the South Island and onto the lower North Island as we start the new week.”

In most places, temperatures are set to peak in the mid-20s. On Friday, MetService said temperatures will hit high-20s in Central Otago

“The progression of the front means these hot conditions won’t last long, as cooler southerly winds follow the rain.”
