The man killed in an altercation in Hamilton early on Sunday morning was celebrating his upcoming birthday, police say.

The 20-year-old died in hospital after he was critically injured during the fight on Alexandra Street shortly after midnight.

The incident, described by police yesterday as a “senseless act of violence”, is believed to have involved two groups of people.

Police said three other people were treated for moderate and serious injuries at the time. Police said today they had since been discharged from hospital.

A forensic examination of the street was completed on Sunday afternoon.

Detective inspector Daryl Smith said police are speaking to a number of witnesses and people involved in the altercation.

“We are making a number of inquiries to locate the offender and the weapon or weapons that were used.”

He said at the time of the incident, Alexandra Street was busy with cars and pedestrians.

“We think it’s highly likely that critical information was recorded on dashcam or cell phones.

“We’re appealing to anyone who was in the area around midnight, if you saw this fight, if you filmed it, or if you have dashcam footage, we need to hear from you as soon as possible.”

Police have set up a dedicated web portal where people can upload footage or photos taken between 11.30pm on Saturday, July 19, to 12.30am on Sunday morning on Alexander Street and the surrounding areas.

“There is still a lot of work ahead of us to understand the full circumstances of what occurred, but the investigation team is committed to piecing the many fragments together.”
