It started with a paddock. Four years ago, Phil Bay and his peers at the Oxford Lions Club were worried about food supply during Covid.

The answer, growing potatoes – and providing it to Satisfy, a food rescue charity which hands the spuds to over 50 foodbanks..

Fast forward to today, Bay and his team have provided 60 tonnes of potatoes – an estimated 100,000 meals – to go towards thousands who are in need across the region.

“The feeling was there was so many people that would be out of work, wouldn’t know where they could get food and that sort of thing.”

Bay, who was last night’s Good Sort, said since they started, the need has not gone away.

“At this stage I can’t see an end to it. I don’t think anyone’s got the real answer for it.”

He said he was always a fan of potatoes.

“When we were kids, it was all you had to eat sometimes.”

Now, bringing spuds to other people is something he enjoys, even if they are strangers.

“You always get a buzz out of providing people with something they need.”
