1 Woman who killed young cyclist while driving drunk and high jailed
A 34-year-old woman who hit and killed an 11-year-old who was biking in Hawke’s Bay has been sentenced to four years and five months in prison.
As the sentence was read to Terina Pineaha, members of the girl’s family walked out, with one addressing the judge saying, “That’s wrong, sir”.
Just before the crash, Pineaha’s car reached estimated speeds of up to 105km/h in a 50km/h zone.

2 ‘High stakes’ ocean rescue hundreds of kilometres from New Zealand
Three people on a life raft were rescued in “trying conditions” hundreds of kilometres off the coast of New Zealand last night.
A merchant oil tanker was the only vessel in the 200 nautical mile area where the mayday was relayed and changed course to answer the call.
An aircraft monitored the life raft and coordinated with the tanker; however, “getting on board a large vessel on the open ocean from a life raft is not an easy task”.

In a post to social media, Fat Freddy’s Drop confirmed Chris Faiumu, also known by stage names DJ Fitchie or DJ Mu, has unexpectedly passed away.
Fat Freddy’s formed in 1999 and burst onto the national scene with the release of their first studio album, Based On A True Story.
“This is a seismic shift in our world. Sending alofa to the Faiumu & Duckworth aiga, and to MU’s wider aiga of friends and fans worldwide,” the band wrote.

4 More than 250-year-old relic located after vanishing for decades
A 256-year-old anchor lost by a French ship has been found after first being located by famous underwater treasure hunter Kelly Tarlton 43 years ago.
Tarlton recorded the location of the anchor but, in the years since, his papers were lost and many experienced divers looked for it.
Efforts to relocate the anchor have been the focus of the RNZ podcast Kelly Tarlton’s Final Treasure Hunt.

5 Concern as long-time manager of Molesworth Station suddenly resigns
The farm manager of New Zealand’s largest livestock station, spanning 200,000 hectares in the high country, abruptly resigned this week.
Farmers were shocked by the station manager’s sudden resignation and were concerned that it may have been caused by the lack of action taken to control wilding trees and plans for the land.
