Firefighters have contained a bush and pine tree slash fire that was earlier threatening at least one property in remote Pataua South, near Whangārei.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson told 1News crews received multiple calls to the fire in Pataua South, just over 26km east of Whangārei, shortly after 2pm.

In an update shortly after 5pm, a spokesperson said the fire had been contained and was no longer spreading.

Aerial crews remained on scene to fully extinguish the bush and pine tree slash blaze, but ground crews had been withdrawn.

At its peak, the 200m by 100m fire required four firetrucks and three helicopters to attend the scene, with a fourth helicopter on standby.

A witness earlier told 1News it was “hard to breathe in some places”.

“The smoke is blowing over the Treasure Island campsite and also over the Patau South residential and bach properties,” they said.
