The Kids Preloved Winter Market, run by K2 Consignments, will be held at the Edgar Centre, with hundreds clothes and items for children and teenagers for sale.
Event organiser Karena Garrett said consignment sales were all the rage in the United States where she grew up, but not common in New Zealand.
“I went overseas last winter and went to a consignment sale, and I said, ‘why aren’t we doing this in Dunedin?”
Selling items on Facebook Marketplace or organising a market stall could be “daunting”, but this weekend’s sale did not require sellers to be present, Ms Garrett said.
“It’s just a nice way to sell your stuff without being overwhelmed with the process.
“It’s not a thrift store, it’s not a rummage sale, it’s good quality, preloved stuff.”
About 100 people had registered kids and teenager clothes and items to be sold — ranging from bassinets to shoes and jewellery.
Sellers label their items with prices they set themselves. A portion of the sales go to K2 Consignments and the rest to sellers, who can get a higher cut if they volunteer at the event.
Any unsold items could be collected by the seller or would be donated to charities, Ms Garrett said.
Dunedin seller and volunteer Belen Sanhueza said she would have about 200 items for sale and was looking forward to having an empty garage.
“I’ve got some really cool stuff that I don’t feel like donating them or giving them away because I need to keep buying clothes for my kids,” she said.
“So I see it as an opportunity to sell them, not as expensive as you buy them, but you get money to keep buying in the future. “
Kids Preloved Winter Market will run at the Edgar Centre tomorrow from 10am-5pm and Sunday from 9am-1pm.
