A driver is in custody after allegedly fleeing police across Auckland this afternoon — with the pursued vehicle spiked multiple times and damage to three police vehicles.

Police first observed the vehicle with mismatching plates travelling city-bound on the Northwestern Motorway before 3pm.

Inspector Kerry Watson said police staff approached the blue Subaru in Western Springs a short time later, intending to ask the driver to stop.

“Instead, the driver took off from police at speed on Great North Road towards Pt Chevalier.

“Police have not pursued this vehicle, but the police Eagle helicopter continued to monitor this vehicle’s erratic and dangerous driving behaviour.”

The car went through numerous suburbs in central Auckland and the CBD, before heading towards Three Kings.

Spikes were “successfully deployed on multiple occasions”, police said.

It pulled into the car park at the Dress Smart shopping centre in Onehunga just after 3.30pm.

“Our staff blocked the vehicle in before taking the male driver into custody.”

Three police vehicles suffered damage in the process of stopping the vehicle, and Watson said it was “pleasing” the matter concluded without anyone being put in further harm’s way.

“The man is now in police custody and charges will follow in due course.”

Watson said police asked any members of the public who witnessed the blue Subaru’s driving this afternoon to contact police on 105.
