Emergency services responded to a serious crash on a major Auckland motorway that left the driver of a van critically injured and closed all southbound lanes for several hours this afternoon.

Police said the two-vehicle crash occurred between a van and a truck just after the Onewa Rd off-ramp on the Northern Motorway around 3.30pm on Friday.

“Traffic is being diverted off the motorway at the Onewa Road off-ramp, to rejoin State Highway 1 via the Onewa Road on-ramp.”

Hato Hone St John said it sent one rapid response vehicle and one ambulance.

“One person was assessed at the scene and is being transported to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition.”

An NZTA spokesperson said the left and middle southbound lanes were blocked.

“Consider using SH16 and SH18 as an alternative route.

“Expect delays and allow extra time for your journey.”

Traffic was also being diverted via the southbound bus lane, the spokesperson added.

Google Maps data showed southbound traffic backed up to Northcote Rd.

All lanes have since reopened.
