A “vehicle of interest” to police fled from a checkpoint in the Wellington region this morning, the driver allegedly reversing into a member of the public’s car before later crashing.
A 35-year-old man was taken into custody after the incident.
It began when the vehicle was spotted in the Waikanae area at about 7am this morning, police said.
The vehicle was tracked to Te Horo and cordons were set up by police, led by the armed offenders squad.
About 8.45am, the vehicle was spotted at a checkpoint on Old State Highway 1 (Riverbank Rd).
“The vehicle fled, reversing into a car driven by a member of the public, who thankfully was unharmed,” police said.
“The vehicle crashed a short time later on Old State Highway 1 and a man was taken into custody.
“He is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
“Old State Highway 1 is currently open; however, police anticipate traffic management will be put in place in the area later in the day to recover the vehicle.”
