A Canterbury couple are stunned to be cleared by a doctor of any injuries after a vehicle ploughed into their house over the weekend – landing on their bed as they slept.
Defying all odds, the pair managed to get out unscathed from beneath the wreckage of the car, which also took out their bedroom wall.
Llewellyn and Sue-ann Venter were renting the home with their two children. They had no insurance, but were thankful to still have each other.
Immediately after the incident, Sue-ann was pinned under the wreckage, while Llewellyn battled to save her.
“I don’t know how I did it. I had the car on one side and her hand in the other … and I just got her out … I still don’t know how, she just came out.”
He said the thought of living without his other half was too much.
“She’s my best friend, my everything. I wouldn’t survive without her. She’s the mother of my children, the best part of me actually.”
He added the sound of the crash was the “worst thing I have ever heard in my life”.
“I still hear it when I sit in a quiet place.”
The pair were both left shaken and badly bruised but, miraculously, escaped serious injury.
“[We were] so surprised when the doctor said everything was clear. We couldn’t believe it … I don’t understand, I really don’t.”
Police said the driver was left in a moderate condition, and a 35-year-old now faces drink-driving charges and is due to appear in court next month.
