Aussies sending Christmas gifts to friends, family and loved ones through the mail are being urged to plan ahead. Australia Post has revealed the cut-off dates for posting parcels, cards and letters so they are delivered before Christmas.

The deadline for sending parcels within Australia is Friday, December 20 for regular parcel post. If you’re willing to spend a bit extra for Express Post, the deadline is pushed back to Monday, December 23.

Christmas letters and cards sent interstate need to be in the mail by Friday, December 13, while those sent within the same state have a deadline of Monday, December 16.

However, Australia Post said those sending items to and from Western Australia and the Northern Territory will need to allow a few extra days for postage.

Australia Post sent nearly 100 million parcels to customers during November and December last year and the postal service is encouraging people to get ahead of the Christmas rush this year.

“We understand how crucial these deadlines are for ensuring cards and gifts reach loved ones in time for Christmas, which is why we’re providing this information as early as possible,” Australia Post general manager Gary Starr said.

“While we’ll do our best to deliver items sent after these dates as quickly as possible, they may not arrive until after Christmas.”

International standard shipping needs to be done by December 5 for New Zealand, December 6 for the UK and East and Southeast Asia, December 9 for Canada and major European destinations, December 10 for China, December 11 for the United States, and November 26 for other destinations.

Express parcels and letters should be shipped by December 13 for East and Southeast Asia, China, the UK, Canada, New Zealand and major European destinations, December 16 for the USA, and December 2 for other destinations.

Courier parcels and letters need to be sent by December 13 for East and Southeast Asia, China and major European destinations, and December 16 for the UK, Canada, the USA and New Zealand.
