Auckland Transport has announced trains in the city will return to their normal schedule, with industrial action by unionised train staff being withdrawn.

The Rail and Maritime Transport Union confirmed to 1News it has reached an agreement in principle with rail operator Auckland One Rail.

It still needs ratification by members, but as a sign of good faith, the current partial strike action will end.

It saw union members refuse to work overtime or any shifts that vary from the master roster from June 8.

On whether the agreement will be ratified, union general secretary Todd Valster said people are “pretty tired of it all” after nine months of negotiations for a new collective agreement.

He reiterated the last pay increase for rail workers was in either November or December 2022.

Members of the union will find out the details of the proposed agreement on Wednesday.

Auckland Transport welcomed the news and said it meant rail services can return to their regular schedule.

AT rail franchise manager Craig Inger says the withdrawal of industrial action means AOR will once again be able to provide reliable train services.

“I’m sure this will come as a relief to the thousands of Aucklanders who have had their journeys disrupted during this time. I’m thankful for their ongoing patience while AOR and the RMTU have worked to come to an agreement.”

This follows the withdrawal of industrial action by unionised staff at CAF, the organisation which maintains AT’s trains, on Friday June 21.

The industrial action had impacted Auckland’s rail network for nearly a month. The action was briefly paused last week for the Super Rugby final.
