An Auckland to Coromandel ferry service will return in October with a new operator after a three-year pause.

Beginning on October 24, the two-hour trip across the Hauraki Gulf would run on Friday evenings, Saturdays, and Sunday, with more departures planned if demand grew.

Explore Group managing director William Goodfellow said the new route filled a gap left when Fullers stopped its summer service in 2022.

“It is the next step in expanding our service on the Hauraki Gulf – from Tiritiri Matangi in the north to Man O’ War, Waiheke and Rotoroa Island to the east – Coromandel is the natural next destination for us.”

The service would depart Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour at 4.45pm, arriving at Hannaford’s Wharf in 6.45pm to be met by a bus service connecting passengers to Coromandel.

Prices for a return trip would be $135 for an adult and $67.50 for a child.

An extended transfer to Whitianga would cost $185 for an adult and $92.50 for a child.

Coromandel-Colville Business Association said it was “thrilled” to welcome the ferry back.

“This regular ferry connection from Auckland to Coromandel Town is a fantastic boost for our community, businesses, and visitors alike – making it easier than ever to experience all that our region has to offer.”

Thames Coromandel District Council’s economic development lead Mitch King said he was very pleased the service was being restored.

“The community has been looking for the ferry service from Auckland to be reinstated for several years now because it’s such an important part of the Coromandel’s hospitality offering. It’s been great to work with Explore Group and the Coromandel Business Association to bring back the ferry connection.”
