A homicide investigation has been launched after one of the men found shot and “unresponsive” in an Auckland car on Monday has died of his injuries.
The two men were shot while in a vehicle on Addington Ave in Manurewa at about 3.20am.
Detective Inspector Karen Bright said in an update on Wednesday morning a 19-year-old man had died of his injuries in hospital.
The other man, 17, remains in hospital in a critical condition.
With a scene examination completed yesterday, Bright said the focus of investigators is now “establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident and supporting both victim’s families at this difficult time”.
“We know this will have been a shock to the community, however we would like to reassure them this appears to be an isolated incident.”
Bright said investigators weren’t in a position yet to release the 19-year-old’s name.
Anyone who was in the Addington Ave area on New Year’s Eve (Sunday, December 31) through to about 3.30am on New Year’s Day (Monday, January 1) is asked to contact police on 105.
People with dashcam footage are also encouraged to get in contact with officers.
