A 31-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly stealing items including critical medical equipment from an air ambulance in Otago earlier this week.

In the early hours of January 12, a bag containing the medical equipment and supplies was stolen from the Queenstown rescue helicopter, which was forced to hold-over at the North Taieri base due to bad weather.

In a statement a police spokesperson said a search warrant was carried out at a Dunedin address yesterday, where a 31-year-old was arrested at the scene.

“The man is alleged to have also been involved in two other burglaries in the Dunedin area the early hours of the morning Sunday, January 12,” the police spokesperson said.

He was due to appear in Dunedin District Court today charged with three charges of burglary and two charges of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.

Inquiries into the incidents were ongoing and further charges likely.
