Air New Zealand flight NZ289 bound for Shanghai has returned to Auckland this morning 4.5 hours into its journey – meaning passengers were in the air for around nine hours.

In a statement to 1News, Air New Zealand said the decision was made to turn the flight around as it was “using more oil than usual”.

As the team does not have full engineering capabilities in Shanghai, the plane returned to Auckland.

“The decision was made to return to Auckland so the aircraft could be checked by our engineering team here to expedite repair.

“The aircraft arrived in Auckland at 8:36am this morning and customers will be accommodated on the next available service.

Flightradar24 showed the flight turned above the Solomon Islands.

“We’d like to thank customers for their patience and understanding while our teams work through the rebooking process.”
