An Air New Zealand flight from Auckland to Vancouver was forced to u-turn last night after a fault was discovered.

Flight NZ24 left Auckland at about 8.30pm – but 90 minutes later, the plane was on its way back.

“An issue with one of the aircraft’s flight spoilers… was identified en route,” the airline’s chief safety officer Captain David Morgan said.

“The aircraft returned to Auckland and our maintenance teams inspected and rectified the issue.”

Flight tracking website FlightAware shows the plane landed back in Auckland at about 11.20pm.

“The safety of our customers and crew is our biggest priority and our pilots are highly trained for these scenarios,” Morgan said.

“The aircraft was prepared for take off not long after and safely departed for Vancouver and is due to land later this afternoon.

“We thank customers for their patience while we worked to get them to where they needed to be.”
