In a fashion landscape still recalibrating after years of disruption, one movement continues to quietly redefine what a runway can be.

Te Wiki Āhua o Aotearoa – Tāmaki Makaurau’s underground fashion week – returns for its fourth season this March, bringing with it a growing network of designers, artists and storytellers shaping the future of fashion in Aotearoa.

Running March 20–28, 2026, the Fall/Winter season once again transforms the city’s creative heart – particularly Karangahape Road – into a stage for emerging designers and interdisciplinary collaborators who might otherwise exist outside the traditional fashion week circuit. Full details can be found on the official Āhua website.

Born from a collective desire to create space for emerging creatives, Te Wiki Āhua o Aotearoa was founded by young organisers frustrated by the lack of platforms for new talent following disruptions to New Zealand Fashion Week. What began as a grassroots initiative has quickly evolved into one of the country’s most exciting independent fashion gatherings, championing community, inclusivity and experimentation over industry convention.

If earlier seasons established the energy of the movement, FW26 looks set to cement its place in the cultural calendar.

A Season Dedicated to Craft

This year’s theme is craftsmanship, an intentional shift toward highlighting the often-unseen process behind fashion creation.

As the organisers explain, the aim is to spotlight the mahi, dedication and artistry behind every garment – “true craft takes time to master,” with the week envisioned as moving through a gallery of designers’ most honest works.

Rather than simply presenting finished collections, FW26 invites audiences to engage with the narrative behind each piece: the materials, the technique and the cultural perspectives shaping contemporary fashion in Aotearoa.

The event also continues its emphasis on performance-based storytelling, a core part of Āhua’s kaupapa – a philosophy centred on authenticity, collaboration and intersectional inclusivity

The Shelter Collaboration

A new highlight for FW26 is a collaboration with Ponsonby retailer The Shelter, which will host a designer showroom for participating labels throughout show week.

Open March 20–28, the showroom will allow visitors to view collections outside the runway format, reinforcing the season’s focus on craftsmanship and process.

The partnership also signals a growing bridge between the underground creative community and established fashion retail – a dynamic that could help emerging designers transition into sustainable careers.

Rather than chasing scale or spectacle, the organisers have consistently focused on creating a space where experimentation is encouraged and emerging designers are given room to grow.

In an industry often dominated by established names, Te Wiki Āhua o Aotearoa continues to prove that the future of fashion in Aotearoa may very well begin underground.
