Around 70 firefighters have extinguished a large blaze in a building in Auckland’s Kumeū which began late last night.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson told 1News calls were initially received at about 10pm, and the fire reached a third alarm level calling for additional firefighting crews.

Speaking from the scene, Fire and Emergency assistant area commander Shaun Pilgrim said on arrival crews found a “well-established fire” in the rear part of a paint and panel shop next to a battery recycling building.

“Couldn’t tell you accurately where [the fire] started at this point, but it was around that rear end of the building.

“That end of the building has been virtually destroyed by the fire, but the other 90% remains intact,” he said.

At the height of the fire, nine fire trucks and two aerial appliances with “about 70 personnel” were in attendance.

“The fire is contained but we’re just double checking there has been limited fire spread between the units,” Pilgrim said.

One truck remained at the scene to monitor hotspots and a fire investigator was set to arrive later this morning.
